OG ans is c but h's wives and his in the sentence is that not causing a referrrant error.

That's a good point, but none of the available answers correct that and make Hemingway a noun to refer back to.

C is the best answer. Later in the sentence, the phrase compares to "women."

Each is singular, therefore you need to correct the "were" in the underlined sentence or make the subject plural, as done in C.
