Despite the criticism in the early 1890's that if journalists use pictures the intellectual quality of publications would diminish, by the late 1890's photographs were found in most newspapers and magazines.

(A) that if journalists use pictures the intellectual quality of publications would diminish,
(B) that if journalists use pictures it will diminish the intellectual quality of publications,
(C) that the use of pictures by journalists would diminish the intellectual quality of publications,
(D) of the intellectual quality of publications being diminished by the use of pictures by journalists,
(E) of the use of pictures by journalists diminish the intellectual quality of publications,

Here is my analysis for Point#1 and Point#2 please let me know if I am wrong or right =

Dealing the above two Options on the basis of If____then____

1. In option, A simple present and would → the wrong combination. The correct combination is simple present and simple future.

2. Option B is technically correct in terms of usage of "If____then____" I mean simple present - simple future combination, but technically the use of simple present is wrong we need versions of past or present continuous, Right? So although If-then statement is correct here, but still meaning wise this option is still wrong.


(D) of the intellectual quality of publications being diminished by the use of pictures by journalists,
Option D changes the meaning because the "quality of publication was not criticized", but "the use of pictures by journalists would diminish the intellectual quality of publications"


E is not even a sentence.

correct about A


No need to get into the subtelities of tenses( almost never deal breakers )

(B)that if journalists use pictures it will diminish the intellectual quality of publications
it has no antecedent
it is a pronoun.
pronoun can never stand for verb.
it is trying to stand for use (verb)

(D)of the intellectual quality of publications being diminished by the use of pictures by journalists,
prep + noun + verbing = incorrect
a rare exception: unless prep refers directly to the noun ( which almost always never a case )

(E)of the use of pictures by journalists diminish the intellectual quality of publications
diminish (verb) cannot follow preposition.

ans is C

Here, the clause in red incorrectly serves as the object of of.
Also, diminish (plural) does not agree with the use (singular).
Eliminate E.

The correct answer is C.

Also how come diminish is plural and use is singular?

PREPOSITION + SUBJECT + VERB is not a valid construction.
In E, the preposition of is incorrectly followed by a subject (the use of pictures by journalists) and a verb (diminish).
Eliminate E.
Also how come diminish is plural and use is singular?

Please explain sir.
the use = singular, the uses = plural:
THE USE IS good.
THE USES ARE good.

diminishes = singular, diminish = plural:
THE USE DIMINISHES the quality.
THE USES DIMINISH the quality.
