Staged is in the right tense with right usage of except.

All others contain tense errors.

(A) Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged - Sounds Correct
(B) Except for a concert performance with the composer himself staging it - staging is incorrect
(C) Besides a concert performance being staged by the composer himself - sounds correct "being" could be a problem
(D) Excepting a concert performance that the composer himself staged - excepting is incorrect
(E) With the exception of a concert performance with the staging done by the composer himself. - too wordy

Between A and C I'll go with A because I cannot find an error in A and C uses "being", which should be avoided.

Between, this question is from Kaplan I guess :-)
