Answer D

A. time, were some of the larger and more luxurious hotels and residences - Comparison issue - larger than what?
B. era, they were some of the larger and more luxurious hotels and residences - Comparison issue - larger than what?
C. era, were some of the largest and more luxurious hotels and residences - USe of era seems off to me plus the second part seems to be missing a reference to the buildings.
D. time, they were some of the largest and most luxurious hotels and residences - Perfect
E. era, were some of the largely and more luxuriously hotels and residences - Largely and more luxuriously. Changes meaning and seems nonsensical

Lesser of evils again. I could forego the they in the last part of the sentence but the comparison issue is prevalent through the other answer choices.
