The distribution of mass within the core of the Earth, like the mantle that surrounds the core, has been deduced from the orbital behavior of the Earth and the motions of satellites controlled by the gravity of the Earth.

(A) the mantle that surrounds the core
(B) that within the mantle surrounding the core
(C) that of the mantle surrounding the core
(D) the mantle the core surrounds
(E) the distribution of mass within the mantle that surrounds the core
OA-B(Why is C wrong?)
I chose B because I considered the parallel structure "mass within the surface of the earth" and found the matching "that within the mantle". I guess this can be one possible explanation.

I also second raghav....parallelism...

Can someone please tell why "E" is wrong...

as far as i understand 'like' is used to compare two nouns. Can someone explain how this fits into the question given or is my understanding wrong. If my understanding is wrong , why is it so ?

Is "that" referring to distribution of mass?? I chose E, thinking that "that" is ambiguous here, and could refer to mass or distribution.. :(

I am not 100% sure about this....but I think....OG replaces....that with nearest complete noun phrase....

here noun phrase is "distribution of mass"

Still what is wrong with "E" ? Can someone please explain ?

For couple of reasons i guess.

1) using the pronoun 'that' makes the sentence less verbose.
2)We don't need restrictive modifier here . using "that surrounds the core" may not be required.

the distribution of mass within X, like that within Y
the distribution of mass within X, like that of Y

that of talks about distribution of mass of mantle whereas what is compared is Distribution of mass within X to Distribution of mass within Y. Hence B preferred over C
