Teachers in this country have generally been trained either to approach mathematics like a creative activity or that they should force students to memorize rules and principles without truly understanding how to apply them.


A)to approach mathematics like a creative activity or that they should force students to memorize rules and principles

B)to approach mathematics like a creative activity or to force students to memorize rules and principles

C)to approach mathematics as a creative activity or to force students to memorize rules and principles
D)that they should approach mathematics as a creative activity or to force students to memorize rules and principles
E)that they should approach mathematics like a creative activity or that they should force students to memorize rules and principles
whats the different in meaning between b and c

MGMAT Explanation says
"Like" is used to compare the similarities between things, while "as" is used in comparisons that show equality. In this case, mathematics is a creative activity; thus, "as" is necessary.

I assume the answer to be C here.
Essentially, Like is used to compare two nouns.
As is used to compare two processes.
"A creative activity" is a process.Hence As is the right usage here.

usage of like is wrong because like is used to compare two nouns and over here mathematics is not being compared to creative activity

i agree that B is incorrect , but why is c correct . lets just forget that its the best of the lot in that case because then we must assume that b is inferior to c
i thought that as a noun is only when it used to denote function or designation .

The original sentence tries to depict two extreme approaches for teaching mathematics. Thats why we have a correlative conjunction - either/or.

The presence of a correlative conjunction (other examples are both/and, neither/nor, between/and, not only/but also) means we need to focus on whether the two ideas (one after either and the other after or) are parallel and can be compared.

After this consideration we are left with only B and C . (E is wrong as it uses should which is a signal for obligation, not a fact). C is correct as we need an "as" here rather than a "like" (like for noun clauses; as for verb/action clauses).

then why isnt it "as it would approach a creative activity "
