A good rule of thumb is to use "like" when there isn't a verb that follows and "as" when there is a verb that follows. In this instance, we have "JD Salinger" without a verb, so we use "like."

Thanks Bill, certainly did not know that.Can you also throw a few examples where using "as" with a verb may be correct.Or such a sentence will always be wrong?
