In recent years, despite the ethnocentrism of Western cultures, Eastern customs are understood in the international community.

A) are understood
B) are becoming better understood
C) which have gained understanding
D) have become understood
E) have since become understood

Between option A and D I chose option A but the correct answer is D. Can someone please explain why A is incorrect and D is correct? Many Thanks.

Eastern customs are understood...

Eastern customs have become understood ....

first means they are understood
where as second means the understanding is going on
we are still understanding further

the sentence expect us to use present perfect...

In recent years, he has grown a lot.
In recent years, he is .... sounds weird..
