The invention of the cotton gin, being one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, had turned cotton cloth into an affordable commodity; it was costly before that.

A)being one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, had turned cotton cloth into an affordable commodity; it was costly before that

B)having been one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, turned cotton cloth into an affordable commodity, costly previously
C)one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, turned cotton cloth into an affordable, however costly previously, commodity
D)one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, turned cotton cloth into an affordable commodity, whereas it had previously been costly
E)being one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, turned cotton cloth from a previously costly commodity to an affordable one

Oa D
Mgmat says it in D is unambiguous . anybody else who agrees ? Bother to explain ?
I feel it in D is ambiguous .

In C , why is the structure "affordable, however costly previously , commodity " wrong .I mean how do you explain this if you wish to avoid eliminating C for reasons of awkwardness.

D isn't ambiguous because the fact that the 'cotton cloth' was a costly commodity is antithetical to the fact of it being affordable now. Hence the qualifier 'it' seems to correctly qualify 'cotton cloth' because of the implicit duality of it's state(being costly, being affordable) in the sentence.

C is really a bad construction because it fails to make a direct comparison of costs with reference to the invention, i.e. to say that 'however costly previously' seemingly suggests a range of costs for the item as opposed to opposite ideas of being cheap and affordable.

HOWEVER is a connecting adverb- which is most often used to connect two clauses. Moreover in Option D, "Had" logically describes the sequence of events.

D)one of the most significant developments of the nineteenth century, turned cotton cloth into an affordable commodity, whereas it had previously been costly
This time no looking back!!!
