OG 12 Q 50

by dv2020 » Sat Jun 04, 2011 2:28 am
According to some analysts, the gains in the stock
market reflect growing confidence that the economy
will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in
the year and instead come
in for a "soft landing,"
followed by a gradual increase in business activity.
(A) that the economy will avoid the recession
that many had feared earlier in the year and
instead come
(B) in the economy to avoid the recession, what
many feared earlier in the year, rather to come
(C) in the economy's ability to avoid the recession,
something earlier in the year many had feared,
and instead to come
(D) in the economy to avoid the recession many
were fearing earlier in the year, and rather
to come
(E) that the economy will avoid the recession that
was feared earlier this year by many, with it
instead coming

Can you please share your reasons for picking the answer...I think these real problems we have to always rule out 4 choices than pick the right one...

The OA is A. I was trapped into picking D because of the normal convention of picking rather between rather and instead but that is usually in case of comparisons here the comparison is not so apparent. The other aspect is to choose between reflect that and reflect in can you guys throw somelight on these two aspects rather than just stating the OA(hope i used rather than correctly here :))

You can say "confidence in" with a noun or noun phrase as an object (confidence in my ability to stay awake). You would have "confidence that" when the object is a clause.
