According to the enrollment statistics published by U.S. medical schools, the number of female medical students is equivalent to the number of male medical students currently enrolled in medical school.

a)the number of female medical students is equivalent to the number of male medical students currently enrolled in medical school.
b) as many female as male students are currently enrolled in medical school
c) the number of female students is as many as that of male students currently enrolled in medical school
d) as great as the number of female is the number of male students currently enrolled in medical school
e) female and male students are currently enrolled in equal numbers in medical school
Ans : B

Can anyone please give an explanation why each of the wrong choices are actually wrong.

a) unnecessary use of 'female medical students' and again 'male medical students', also equivalant doesn't seem to be right.

c) is as many as that of..... incorrect use

d) as great as and is are used to compare male and female.... incorrect

e) 'in equal numbers' and again 'in medical school'

Only option B correctly uses as many female as male...Pretty concise,short and clear.

The correct answer is B ofcourse.

Lets begin with POE
E. The way thesentence conveys its meaning is actually very diferent from what we do in normal english. Twice use of "in" is redundant.

D. "As great as" is obviously wrong. We are talking about numbers here. Numbers can always be more than, less than but not great as.

C. Parallelism is lost. The number of females is compared to males (not the number of males)!!!

A. Wordy. "Medical" is used where only "student" is sufficient.

Hence B.
