A few handy tips on SENTENCE CORRECTION

by komal » Sun Jan 24, 2010 7:24 am
Isn't it wonderful that there are great number of people out there who put in a lot of effort to make it easy for the GMAT novices. My sincere thanks to them all. Here's another one of quick tips i got on search engines. I wish to share it with u :

SENTENCE CORRECTION tips :

1. The error is in the underlined part. Therefore, do not look for the error in the rest of the sentence. The test maker does not test for punctuation, spelling or capitalisation.

2. The first option usually repeats the underlined part of the sentence. Therefore, if you think that the sentence is incorrect while reading it, you can straight away rule out option (A)

3. First, look for violation of the basic grammar rules. Concentrate on mixing of tenses, subject-object agreement, conjunctions etc.

4. While looking for the correct answer, make sure that you do not change the original meaning of the sentence.

5. The best way to determine the exact error in the sentence is to read all the options carefully. Observe the changes made in each of the sentences. You will get a cue of the nature of the error.

6. There are usually two options that correct the error. One of them is again modified by the introduction of another error and may seem nearly correct. Try to spot this mistake so that you may hit upon the only correct answer.

7. An effective sentence expresses an idea or relationship clearly and concisely and is grammatically correct. This does not mean that the choice with the fewest and simplest words is necessarily the best answer. It means there are no superfluous words or needlessly complicated in the best choice.
