Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, //merging the nuclei of atom and not spliting them apart, as in nuclear reactors//

a,

b,merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors

c, merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do

d, and merges the nuclei of atoms but dose not split them apart, as is done in nuclear reactors

e,and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart

why b is wrong,

pls, explain the difference

1, like her, I speak English
2, I speak English like her
3, I speak English as she dose
4, I speak English like her chatting

friends. we should understand fullly the OG. do not try to do many questions.

I am no SC expert, but I'll try to explain…

This sentence is fundamentally a contrast between 2 actions, in the way (nuclear fusion and nuclear reactors) affect the nuclei of atom (either merging or splitting).

Between B and C, the usage of instead of/ rather than is not the issue. I believe both are acceptable. However, we have the following difference:

B.…. splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors
C.…. splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do

The phrase after splitting them apart must be compared in a logically parallel way to splitting them apart. In B, splitting them apart (a clause) is not parallel to nuclear reactors (noun). However, C puts this right with both sides being parallel (as is used to introduce a clause). In my opinion, this is the reasoning for choosing C instead of B.

Would be interested to know what others think.

I agree with Bluementor

b,merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors -- Like is used to compare nouns, 'as' is used to compare phrases and clauses. Here usage of like is wrong.
c, merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do -- Correct comparison

d, and merges the nuclei of atoms but dose not split them apart, as is done in nuclear reactors -- 'and' is a coordinating conjunction. Use of and is wrong.
e,and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart -- same explanation as for option D


1, like her, I speak English --Wrong, A person is compared with speaking
2, I speak English like her -- Wrong, Clause is compared with a pronoun
3, I speak English as she dose -- Correct usage
4, I speak English like her chatting-- Wrong, 'As' is preferred to compare clauses.

Between B and C,

Plz keep an eye on the use of "Like" and "As"

Like is used to compare two Nouns
As id used to compare two actions.

In the question, the focus is on

merging the nuclei of atoms VS Splitting them apart. This qualifies for the use of "As" .

When two actions(each opposite to other) are compared, try to use "rather than".

I wish you read the explanation in OG 11 before we discuss.

My question is clear, why "like" in B is wrong and "as" in C is right. we do not discuss other things in this sentence

Let say B is correct.. then it means

Like NR, NF is force..that powers,...sun and hydrogen bombs..

it means NR is force that powers.. sun and hydrogen bombs.
This is totally illogical. So B is wrong.

C. looks good comparing two clauses.

NF is doing something.. , as nuclear reactors do.

so , do you mean that " like you, I lean Englsh" has meaning that " I and you are similar in that we both lean English" and in B, because "like" is used so the meaning is that " NR and NF are similar in that they both power the Sun and Bom"and this iilogica and B is wrong?

but in C, "NR do" mean "NR powers" so "power" what? , pls, explain

NF is doing something.. , as nuclear reactors do.

Here nuclear reactor is being compared to a process...misplaced comparision
we need to refer to a process which is rightly done in C
