OA E

One main reason to get to ans - all other options have 'arising' in them, and in B and D the usage of 'yields' is wrong. It doesn't go with the plural subject 'trenches'

I would also go with E. another reasoning could be "evidence that..." sounds better than other options.

Knock out B and D due Noun-Verb Number mismatch.
The first trenches.....yields strong evidence

Unnecessarily complex tense usage in C : ...having been cut into...

A has incorrect idiomatic construction in this part ......have yielded strong evidence for centrally administered....

E corrects all errors above.

Please share if you have differing thoughts.

In any SC quetion, begin with the simplest and most glaring errors. In most cases, as in this one, there would be subject-verb mismatches.

The 'trenches' yielded some evidence - 'trenches' is plural and requires 'yield', not 'yields'. This helps us eliminate options B and D.

In option C, 'trenches having been cut' is incorrect. C is also missing a 'with' after 'simultaneously'. The correct usage is 'simultaneously with, but independent of X'.

In option A, the intended meaning does not come out clearly. Option A implies that the trenches provided evidence for the complex societies themselves. This is not the intended meaning. The trenches have, in fact, provided evidence that something, an event X (complex societies in northern regions of the ME arose simultaneously with the more celebrated cities of southern Mesopotamia), happened.

Thus, E is the right answer.
