Reporting that one of its many problems had been the recent extended sales slump in women’s apparel, the seven-store retailer said it would start a three-month liquidation sale in all of its stores.

(B) its many problems has been the recently
(C) its many problems is the recently

I would go with 'B'.

'D' & 'E' are out because subject "The retailer" is singular.
'A' is out because the problem is over not continuing.

'C' confuses me...

But would like to go with 'B' here.

Let us know the correct ans.

Here the sentence says "recent extended sales" means something is going on from the past and still continuing to the present so i feel that it should be said in a present perfect tense so "HAS" is the correct answer... I will go with ANSWER : B...The person who has posted this question if you have access to the answer to this question please do post it...Thanks....

my take is A.
Had been correctly points to the sequence of events. And option D and E are out for singular noun "it"

Usage of past tense had is correct because one action i.e "its many problems had been the recent extended sales slump in women�s apparel" comes before the next action i.e "the seven-store retailer said it would start a three-month liquidation sale"

B cannot be correct because the word "recently", as used here suggests that someone or something recently extended the sales slump.

"recent extended sales slump" is correct because the use of the adjective recent correctly modifies the noun "sales slump". Ie. the sales slump occurred recently.

B can not be correct bcuz the usage of 'recently'
when we have adj + adj + noun => both adjectives modify nount like the one one u see in choice A.. if you eliminate middle adj (extended), recent sales slump still make sense and it is correct
but adverb + adj + noun, adverb can not modify the noun ==> here recently can not modify the sales slump (while it must do so) ==> change the meaning and wrong
