Using "that"

by venjam » Thu Jul 26, 2012 4:18 pm
In OG 13TH Edition
In 1713, Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad, a work that took him seven years to complete and that literary critic Samuel Johnson, Pope's contemporary, pronounced it as the greatest translation in any language.

My Question is about highlighted word "that". I am aware that it obeys parallelism, is there any other reason ?
I am having hard time to understand why we need that word there?
Please clarify

The pronoun "that" needs to be used in this sentence because it shows that what follows "and" refers to the subject "work." If you omitted "that," the part of the sentence which follows "and" would sound as if it were a separate clause not related to "work."

Also in the quoted sentence the use of the pronoun "it" after "pronounced" is incorrect.
