Having often been thought of as still a city of working-class neighborhoods, Chicago is increasingly populated by poor people.

A) Having often been thought of as still a city of working-class neighborhoods, Chicago is increasingly populated by poor people.

B) It is still often thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, and Chicago is increasingly populated by poor people.

C) In spite of still often being thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, the people who populate Chicago are increasingly poor.

D) It is still often thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, but the people who populate Chicago are increasingly poor.

E) Although still often thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, Chicago is increasingly populated by poor people.

When I think of a working-class neighborhood, I think of a neighborhood populated by poor people. This is because I associate working-class people with blue collar jobs, who are not well off.

As a result, I eliminated answers C, D, and E and got the question incorrect. Was it an incorrect method of thinking to eliminate those 3 choices based on my idea of what it means to be from a working-class neighborhood? The section that the question appeared in is Sentence Correction, but this was too much for me to ignore.

B) It is still often thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, and Chicago is increasingly populated by poor people.[Modifier correct but thought of as a city -- not good option]

C) In spite of still often being thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, the people who populate Chicago are increasingly poor.[Wrong modifier , the people is not the city of working class , it shud be Chicago, hence eliminated starightaway]

D) It is still often thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, but the people who populate Chicago are increasingly poor.[Same as C]

E) Although still often thought of as a city of working-class neighborhoods, Chicago is increasingly populated by poor people.[Modifier is correct and contrast is depicted using although ]


I m not an expert , just a learner . Hope that helps

@AIM GMAT. I agree with you, but I eliminate B for "and" in the sentence. There is no contrast when compared to E.

Yeah finalshot123 i agree , "and" is not required in B , actually in B modifier is also in correct because and is followed by comma and it should be CHicago .

Having often been thought = use of perfect participle, this is not required I think, perfect participle is used, when one action is ended and another action immediately follows that.
Having delivered the mail, the postman left.

, and = coordinating conjunction, coordinating conjunction joins two standalone clauses, but in this case, these are not independent. It is thought that Chicago is a city of working class, BUT it is populated by poor.

Wrongly modifies the people.

Correct.
