In D and E the relative clause starting with that - that organized... modifies decision. This means that the decision organized the exhibit, which is clearly illogical. This rules out D and E.

A lacks parallelism. A preposition before art movement is missing.
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit in -
1) chronological order
rather than
2) art movement

C is wordy and needlessly uses according to twice when one would have sufficed to maintain parallelism.
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit according to -
1) chronological order
rather than
2) art movement

B is correct because it maintains parallelism by introducing a preposition before art movement.
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit -
1) in chronological order
rather than
2) by art movement

A technique which I use to check parallelism is to make a list like that shown above whenever parallelism is evident and then read the two parts alternately to see if they individually make grammatical sense.

E.g. In the list for A shown above, I would read -
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit in chronological order - Correct.
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit in art movement - Incorrect. Wrong preposition.

If I read the list for B, it says -
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit in chronological order - Correct.
Many critics reproved the curator's bold decision to organize the exhibit by art movement - Correct

Thus B is perfect.

HI reply2sg - nice question. Though B looks parallel, I am not sure whether we can have a parallel structure with 'two different prepositions' - (in our case 'in' & 'by').

I don't see anything wrong with C though!

hi, the idiom is "in chronologcal" order. we wudn,t say "by chronologcal".
iN "A" LACKS OF PARALLELSM & CHANGES THE MEANING=(in chronological order rather than art movement)
IN "D" THAT REFERRENT IS WRONG.

Correct!

Choosing the right preposition is idiomatic - in fact, if you don't put in the proper preposition, the answer becomes grammatically incorrect.

If the two parts of the sentence take different prepositions, we have to put them both in.
