active vs passive

by ashish1354 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:47 pm
Camille Claudet worked continuously through the 1880's and early 1890's with the sculptor Auguste Rodin; since there are very few signed works of hers, the inescapable conclusion seems to be one of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin's enormous production of that period.

(A) inescapable conclusion seems to be one of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin's enormous production of that period
(B) conclusion of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin's enormous production of that period seems inescapable
(C) conclusion seems inescapable that part of Rodin's enormous production of that period was conceived and executed by Claudet
(D) conclusion of part of Rodin's enormous production of that period having been conceived and executed by Claudet seems inescapable
(E) seemingly inescapable conclusion is that Claudet would have conceived and executed part of Rodin's enormous production of that period

between c) and e) i chose e) for active voice but the answer is c)

i do not understand why?

Please help me understand the specific grammar rule violated by e) and the reason why c) is a better choice.

I was also confused between C and E but at last chose C. Mainly because the use of "would be". "Would be" is used in E which shows the meaning as if, we are not sure and claudet might have conceived and executed blah blah. But this is not true. As per original sentence, it is clear that Claudet conceived and executed blah blah.
So I chose C.
Hope this helps!

yes, the problem with (e) lies in its use of "would have". this is inappropriate for the situation.

the only thing that's not quite right with the post above is its description of the use of "would have".
"would have" does NOT indicate uncertainty (unless it's prefaced by a word that explicitly indicates uncertainty, e.g., perhaps or possibly).

"would have" is normally used for the outcome of some past hypothetical that didn't actually happen. this is not the same as uncertainty: in fact, "would have" can be used for consequences that would certainly have occurred if some other event had transpired.
example:
if i had left just five minutes earlier, i would have caught that flight.

Ron - would have if a tense than E is wrong - but would have could be a perfective past participle as well.

what is the best way to determine when would have + participle - is a tense and when it is the case when would have is the tense rather than the case of perfective past participle.

Thanks
