Some proponents of microfinance assert that residents of an underdeveloped country will be able to rise out of poverty only if they were given loans to begin lucratively independent businesses.


(A) only if they were given loans to begin lucratively independent businesses

(B) only if they are given loans to begin lucrative independent businesses

(C) if only loans to begin lucrative and independent businesses be given to them

(D) if they would be given loans only to begin lucratively independent businesses

(E) if they only were given loans to begin a independent businesses, lucratively

A, if they were(hypothetical) . is correct usage

Sentence A contains a verb tense error: residents will be able to rise out of poverty only if they were given loans is incorrect. A resulting future action must depend on a present tense condition.

Additionally, it does not make sense to describe the businesses as lucratively independent. The adverb lucratively, or "profitably," illogically describes the adjective independent; it does not make sense to say that something is "profitably" independent, or independent in a profitable way. The businesses themselves should be described as independent and as lucrative.

Option B fixes the verb tense error in the conditional by changing the past tense were to the present tense is. If they are given loans...they will be able to rise out of poverty. This choice also replaces the illogical lucratively with the adjective lucrative, which describes the business itself as profitable. Choice B is correct
