Contemporary accounts of the life of Charlemagne, crowned emperor by the pope in 800, show that the founder of the Carolingian renaissance in literature and the arts was himself an illiterate driven by his desire for a civilized state to reform education in his kingdom.

Tough one but I would have gone with C in order to have parallelism i.e that x & that y......whats the OA?

This one is a bit tricky !!
A - driven by...modifies illiterate. This means He was illiterate driven by his desire..
B - AND ALSO
E - prep phrase 'for a civilized..'modifies verb "driven". But from the original sentence it appears the prep ph is a noun modifier ie modifying desire. It changes the intended meaning
Btn C & D - D dropped as it uses 'as well as' when AND can be used
IMO C
All options maintains that X...and that Y.. ||llelism

Narrow down to two choices C & D.

In D how is "as well as" is not used correctly.

two questions
1)why is "as well as" used incorrectly in D?[if it is indeed wrong]
2) why is "in literature and the arts" correct in A?

Would be great if some expert can shed some light
