605.Reporting that one of its many problems had been the recentextended sales slump in women’s apparel, the seven-store retailer said it would start a three-month liquidation sale in all of its stores.
(A) its many problems had been the recent
(B) its many problems has been the recently
(C) its many problems is the recently
(D) their many problems is the recent
(E) their many problems had been the recent
( OA is A but isn't 'recently' correct as it modifies the adjective extended here ? )

In this sentence, "recent" modifies the noun phrase "extended sales slump", not just the word "extended".

Also, answer choice A correctly uses the past perfect tense to show that the sales slump occured before the announcement of the sale.

I agree! Reporting is a tense that parallels the main clause's tense of "would". Would is stated in the past so "had" is needed to show a logical chain of events. Recent versus recently was too subtle for me to discern, so the verb tenses helped a lot more.
