B.have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
C.would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
D.would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic
E.would have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economical

"Economical" (meaning frugal) is wrong in this sentence so B,C and E are out. The correct tense is "would have to know" so A is out too. That leaves D as the correct answer.

Isis - Even i was expecting it to be D, but the OA turned out to be E.
Thanks for the confirmation. "Economical" doesn't make any sense in this context.

do you mean the correct answer is A? or D? (you have to "D")
What is the source of this document? what question number?

sorry for the goof-up. OA is E.

I got it from one of the yahoo group named "GMATNetwork".
It contains some Maths Sets and Verbal sets.

Well, I am pretty sure is plain wrong. It has to be "economic"

"To develop' would rather go with 'would have to know'
This option is incorrect. It suffers from simple parallelism

Option B.
This option commits the same error as option A. The use 'have to' makes this option incorrect.

Option c.
This Option looks correct but the use of economical which means frugal and careful with money makes the option invalid.

Option D
THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER.
Because it follows proper parallelism and does not suffers what the above option suffers. So, therefore, the use of 'economic' over 'economical' is preferable.

Option E.
This option is incorrect because the use of 'economical' does not follow the contextual meaning of the subject matter.

Hey folks,

We've got a couple of issues going on in these answer choices.

Issue #1: parallelism
When we are comparing two things (signaled here by "more than"), those things need to be parallel. Here we want to compare how much demographers need to know to how much demographers know now.

However, when we look at answer choice A, we see

"demographers have to know a great deal more than now"

So we're comparing how much demographers need to know to "now". We can't compare an amount of information to a time.

This is corrected in the other answer choices with:

"demographers [would] have to know a great deal more than they do now"

Eliminate A.

Issue #2: tense

We are comparing how much demographers know "now" to a hypothetical situation in which demographers know more, which allows them to develop more accurate population forecasts. However, in A and B, the verb "have to know" indicates that demographers are making more accurate forecasts right now in the present, and that forces them to know more in the present than they do "now" ... which is also in the present. This comparison doesn't make any sense - how can they know more now than they know now?

C, D, and E correct this by using "would have to know", which indicates that demographers cannot currently develop accurate population forecasts, and if they want to, they will have to know more.

Eliminate A and B.

Issue #3: meaning

"Economic" means "related to the economy". "Economical" means "using limited resources; thrifty". It doesn't make any sense to say the "thrifty determinants of fertility". We want to say "the determinants of fertility that are related to society (social) and related to the economy (economic).

Eliminate B, C, and E.

OA is definitely D here.
