in which vs when

by gmat_dest » Sun Jul 05, 2009 12:23 am
Hi folks,

I want to know the difference between 'in which' and 'when'.
If suppose we had two options that are exactly the same apart from
the usage above, which one would be correct?

Thanks

--------------------------
His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine home-land, far outside the range of present-day glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the concept of an age in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas.
(A) in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas
(B) in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas
(C) when great ice sheets existed where there were areas now temperate
(D) when great ice sheets had existed in current temperate areas
(E) when great ice sheets existed in areas now that are temperate

I second that...OG says that both can be used interchangeably....

there must be someother reason to kick out the choices.

Here's my reasoning:

The past perfect has to be used, since the ice age occurred before Agassiz's studies. This narrows us down to A, D. The phrase "now currently temperate areas" isn't idiomatic, so I would choose D.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

Actually, the OA is B. Look on TestMagic forums... there's a reason for why the past perfect isn't to be used.
