There is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy either now or within a few years will be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power.
(A) either now or within a few years will be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power
(B) will either be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power within a few years or are so now
(C) will be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power either now or within a few years
(D) either are now economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power or will be so within a few years
(E) are either now or will be within a few years economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power

Good question..
C is wrong because it uses "will be competitive....either now....", which is wrong. i too chose C initially. Same problem with A.
Best choice among all is D then

(C) There is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy will be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power either now or within a few years

We are comparing time here

(D) There is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy either are now economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power or will be so within a few years

First of all I don't like "either are"
Also I find this too wordy!

Please let me know what you think?

Even i found either are awkward...but if you break down C, remove either..or..and see whether sentence makes sense..
There is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy will be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power now - "Now" is awkward here..

There is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy will be economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power within a few years - This is fine
Similarly for D:

There is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy are now economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power - Fine

here is substantial evidence that certain forms of solar energy will be so (economically competitive with conventional sources of heat and power)within a few years - Fine
Opinions?

Lets shorten the option (C) and (D) to have a clear view.

Which of the following is better?

C. It will be economical now or in near future.
D. It either is economical now or will be so in near future.

I know (D) sounds awkward but it is grammatically correct and also maintains parallelism.

(either + auxiliary verb + time) + (or + auxiliary verb + time)

What is wrong with statement C?

I) It change the meaning of the sentence. It means that certain thing is not yet economical and it will be economical from now onwards. Whereas real statements states that the certain thing (certain form of solar energy in original statement) is economical in present time. Statement (D) holds the meaning of the original statement hence it is correct over here.
