The question expects us to compare the same things..

So here:

Archaeologists have shown that ingesting lead in drinking water was a significant health hazard for the ancient Romans, like that of modern Americans.

We are comparing the phenomena of lead ingesting.

We are not comparing nouns, we cant use "like"

so A is out.

B) )as that for modern Americans

Improper comparison between the phenomena and modern Americans.

We want to compare lead injection with some phenomena presently happening with modern Americans.

B does wrong comparison.

C) and D changes the meaning by stating that the action is done by Americans intentionally.

E) perfectly compares the phenomena by using "it" for modern Americans

Thank you :) I chose B over E as i thought "it" could not refer to phrases.

The source is from a kaplan test. I referred to OG now and I think I'm quite clear . Thank you :)
