Rising cost

by rahul.s » Sat Jan 23, 2010 9:17 am
In most industries the rising cost of support services does not hurt business owners, but it does pass a greater financial burden on to customers. In the legal profession, for example, a climb in the cost of court reporting in recent months has forced many attorneys to raise their hourly rates.

A) has forced many attorneys to raise their hourly rates.
B) has made many attorneys raise their hourly rates.
C) has meant that many attorneys are being forced to raise their hourly rates.
D) is forcing that many attorneys to raise their hourly rates.
E) is meaning that many attorneys are raising their hourly rates by force.

OA: A

simple and straightforward.

A) nothing wrong with the sentence. gramatically correct.
B) has made many attorneys raise their hourly rates. [made is different from forced. moreover it can force an attorney to do something. the infinitive 'to' is required.]
C) has meant that many attorneys are being forced to raise their hourly rates. [ too wordy and moreover there is a change in meaning.somebody is not forcing the attorneys]
D) is forcing that many attorneys to raise their hourly rates. [ is forcing is continous tense. we do not know if it is continuing. present perfect tense is required]
E) is meaning that many attorneys are raising their hourly rates by force. ['is meaning' is wrong]

Hope this helps!

Is it a GMAT Club Test question ? Because I just came across the same and the OA is D. Below is the explanation. Correct me if I am wrong.

a. The past tense has forced does not take into account the fact that the rising costs are a current trend.

b. Has made incorrectly uses the past tense; the phrase is also both informal and imprecise.

c. Has meant incorrectly uses the past tense. Has meant and are being forced use inconsistent verb tenses, and are unnecessary phrases.

d. The phrase is forcing correctly uses the present progressive tense, reflecting a current trend.

r. By force is a misplaced modifier that confuses the meaning of the sentence; is meaning is an imprecise phrase.

The correct answer is D

Bro , Correct me if i am wrong ,but has/Have +past implies the present perfect tense right ?
Which means something started in the past (a lil while ago ) and still has its effect.
So don't you think A also means the same as D ?
