SC - Connection of clause

by karthikpandian19 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 1:09 am
Increasing costs may be prompting contractors to cut corners in ways that are not obvious to clients, like to use inferior quality plywood when constructing a floor in order to increase their profit margins.

(A) clients, like to use

(B) clients, as an instance, to use

(C) clients; contractors may, for instance, use

(D) clients, such as to be using

(E) clients; which might, as an instance, be the using of

+1 for C.

(A) clients, like to use >> Illogical comparison between 'to use' and 'increasing costs'

(B) clients, as an instance, to use >> Run-on

(C) clients; contractors may, for instance, use

(D) clients, such as to be using >> 'Such as' is not supposed to modify clients.

(E) clients; which might, as an instance, be the using of >> multiple errors is the part after semicolon. Importantly, that part is not an independent clause.

(A) clients, like to use--Like can be used to compare only nouns.

(B) clients, as an instance, to use ---who use?subject is missing. It by default points to Increasing costs, which doesn't make sense.

(C) clients; contractors may, for instance, use ----Correct

(D) clients, such as to be using --Such as must be used to introduce examples

(E) clients; which might, as an instance, be the using of--Run on

(A) clients, like to use (incorrect use of "like" for a comparison)

(B) clients, as an instance, to use ("as an instance" should be "for instance"; even if that change is made, we still have clause problems)

(C) clients; contractors may, for instance, use (works; uses a semicolon to join two independent clauses)

(D) clients, such as to be using (no need for an infinitive here)

(E) clients; which might, as an instance, be the using of (wordy and awkward)
