Researchers have discovered a new species of sparrow that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from all other sparrows.

A) that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows in cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from

yes that's correct

A new species is singular and hence will always take a singular verb.

What makes it singular - is it presence of article 'A' or something else?

THE CURATORS - is it singular / plural? Why?

That refer to sparrow - singular.

When we have,

Noun1 + preposition + noun 2 that ...

that can refer to noun 1 or noun 2, decided by context.

My understanding is the "species" can be singular or plural, and you have to look at the context to understand which it is. In this case "a new species" is specified in the "a". Compare that sentence to something like "Several new species of sparrow that live only in Cypress trees."

THE CURATORS - is it singular / plural? Why?

"The Curators" will be plural, because you are referring to several individuals. BUT, there are a lot of tricky bits in this sentence: "A Comprehensive Exhibition of the Work of Leading Swiss Designers" will be singular, because it's "a comprehensive exhibition", but the phrase "their most famous bridges and buildings" refers to the plural "leading Swiss designers".
