Extremely tricky SC from OG Verbal

by varunrajwade » Sun Jun 29, 2008 7:30 pm
In recent ears cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

A)in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
B)in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
C)partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics.
D)partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers.
E)partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers.

This is one of the oldest and most debated SCs ever... I searched it in TM/GMATClub and this forum and has lotsa threads..

What makes this problem so tricky is both D and E are wrong in some sense or the other but its just a matter of selecting which one is better...

To me its E

partly to acquire

and

partly because cross breeding is said to provide

are parallel

With D, the problem to me is, it misses the point that farmers are doing CB to achieve some thing. It kind of says they are doing C because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers ( should be is really strong and also passive voice )

Why are partly to acquire and partly because parallel...

I think Parallelism is really mis-understood and mis-used by many... Surely partly because in choice D is more parallel than the sentence in E..

Parallelism is both structural and logical

just because we have a because in the underlined part does not mean that we need a because in the first part. The way D is written with because changes the original meaning.

D sounds as if the CB is done because attaining certain characteristics is mandatory and because CB is said to provide hybrid vigor

Now look at E

E sounds as if CB is done to acquire certain characteristics in their steers and because CB is said to provide hybrid vigor.

Do I make any better sense now?

All said, I know how it feels like to be on the other side of the aisle. There were instances when I did not agree with people and their understanding/logic of the OA.

E shouldbe the answer as only C is parallel.
