OG 10- Good one

by 800target » Tue Mar 22, 2011 12:40 pm
I have a OG 10 SC question, although before it had been discussed but still I have doubt and need experts to come and help us:
Question: For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788, England exiled some 160,000 criminals to Australia.
(A) For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788
(B) Beginning in 1788 for a period of a hundred years
(C) Beginning a period of almost a hundred years, in 1788
(D) During a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788
(E) Over a period of a hundred years beginning in 1788
OA:E

Why E is correct and why D can NOT be correct? What is wrong with C grammatically and logically?? Also, can elaborate the skeleton of the sentence for me? Thanks in advance for your great help.

It is a problem of wrong apposition.

During a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788 is wrong for two reasons:

1. A hundred years has been defined as a period beginning in 1788.
2. COMMAS set of the non-essential part of a sentence.

For almost a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788, England exiled some 160,000 criminals to Australia. if we eliminate the non-essential part we get.

For almost a hundred years, England exiled some 160,000 criminals to Australia.

This part lacks a key point which hundred years.

So D is incorrect.

it seems to me that i know why C is wrong
in OG-12. page 658, #3 sentence with similar structure exists
i mean the year in given example ,in 1788, and in og 12 , until alsmost 1900,
oe says that we should avoid putting the date, or any time designators that is separated with commas from both parts and that is inserted between clauses, as this date could possibly refer to any clause creating ambiguity
