IMO B.

The car can be either damaged or completely but not both . So left with B and D.
B is the answer.

B - had been - incorrect
C - accidents damaged - incorrect
D - accidents damaged - incorrect
E - Correct !

The cars were damaged first and sold late...the usage of tense is wrong in B
C,D,E can be clearly rejected due to their improper construction

Hence IMO : A

Please advise OA

A is the best amongst all.. B was close but the tense didnt fit in here as there are no 2 events to use past perfect!!

Actually there are.

1. Cars met with accidents, but before these cars met with accidents,

Another issue is that the way damaged and completely wrecked are used in the sentence, it should be clear that the car can either be damaged or be completely wrecked. So, an or, as used in B, is the correct usage.

I agree with the either or part perhaps that made B close. But the two events part I m still skeptical as it is likely to be what mentioned above ! I did consider that possibility before i waved off B forever..

Great discussion!

First, I thought the cars were damaged and then sold. But after reading EducationAisle's post I re-read the question and found a different concept in sentence.

The sentence actually tries to convey that, because cars were sold without adhering to standards they were damaged or completely wrecked by accidents.
