But isn't it that which modifies the noun immediately preceding it and in this case it is Edgar Allan Poe?
Please clarify if I'm missing out something here

IMO C. As we are comparing the works of Edgar Poe with works of Hawthrone.

-- 'which were ignored' in option D would have been correct if preceded by comma. Also 'which' is used to introduce non essential modifiers.
-- 'Having been ignored' in option E is awkward.

I will go with "C"

"Edgar Allan Poe " is not parallel with "the works of Hawthrone". Eliminate A & B.

In "D", the which is incorrect. Eliminate D.

Between C & E, I chose "C" just because "E" sounds a bit awkward & wordy and I couldn't find any such errors with "C".

So to summarize,do you mean to say the rule is :

A of B which .... implies that which applies to noun A and not noun B.
Is this the rule?

IMO D

"Which" can not refer to a person (here, it can not refer to Edgar Allan Poe"). So "which" is referring to "the works"

IMO C.

2- 3 Split; Edgar Allan Poe vs the works

the works wins - because it his/her work compared here.
A and B are out.

D - "Which" - Pronoun ambiguous. it should modify - the works
E- "having been ignored in his country" - awkward

C - "ignored in his native country" is participial phrase correctly modifying the works.

Note: Participial phrase can modify the noun and it does not need to precede or next to the noun.

Between C and D - C is better compared to D. So, Ans C.

What is OA?

Should be C.
The works are compared here so C\D\E are only possibilities
D: INCORRECT : which is used to restrict works, hence comma is required.
E: INCORRECT : Its not clear what the present participle 'having' reffered to. Is it works, or Edgar Allan Poe..

Nothing worng with C

D is incorrect as "which" after Allen Poe will refer to Allen Poe which is not correct.

C is correct: Unlike the works of Edgar Allan Poe, ignored in his native country, the works of.....
