In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

IMO C .whats the OA ? D is passive . but not sure with C also , as i feel "their" is ambiguous don know what it modifies "crossbreeding" or "steers".

to acquire sounds parallel to "to provide" and moreover "to acquire" is the correct idiom
