explanations needed

1.A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published,

reveals that Twain provided financial assistance to
one of the first Black students at Yale Law School.

(A) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year recruits to the United States work force that
as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were
published,
(B) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year
of publication as The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn,

(C) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year
that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was
published,
(
(D) Mark Twain wrote a letter in the same year as he
published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
that

(E) Mark Twain wrote a letter in the same year of
publication as The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn that




why is c correct ..? what about the modifier touch rule...i don even find it an exeption...

volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.

(B) of firms to survive
(c. for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms' survival


ans is b.
is a not an answer because such firms doesn't find any referent in the subordinating clause...?
what about E.. why is it wrong?

1. The modifier "written in the same year that the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published" concerns "a letter". What comes after the modifier is not the main core of the sentence (subject + verb). Therefore, the rules are not so strict in this case.

2. Answer A does not provide the point of reference for "such firms."

in 2nd question, is E incorrect because SUCH needs a referent that is acting as a proper noun and not as possesive..?

if possible , can u please give me few examples of noun modifier case as in quesn 1. letter and modifier are not exactly touching each other ,there is BY MARK TWAIN in b/w...
