Some scholars who study Woolf's novel To The Lighthouse argue that each of the vacationers - Mrs. Ramsay, Mr. Ramsay, Lily, and Charles-is depicted not as a true character but rather as a caricature, even less developed than the simplest Ramsay child.

The correct answer is a.
"Each of..." should be followed by a singular verb. The enumeration of the characters is there to mislead the test-takers.
Answers b,c,d,e all contain mistakes related to subject verb agreement. In answer b the structure "as...as" is not correctly formed because the second "as" is missing. Answer c apart from the SVA mistake is also stylistically flawed and it changes the meaning. Answer e is unnecessarily wordy.
