1. SAME

3. Although living conditions for the inhabitants of the Sahel improved after the end of the 1973 drought, during which the estimated proportion of the cattle lost was 70%,

4. While there was an improvement in living conditions for the inhabitants of the Sahel after the 70% total cattle loss of the 1973 drought, still

5. Despite Sahel inhabitants' living conditions iprovement from 1973 drought's 70% total cattle loss,

I will go with C. But the choices seem to be missing some information and the sentence is confusing to determine what is underlined.

i pick A

as 'but' introduces an error for all other options
still feel A is not the best answer

1. can't be right -- because the comma before the "but" needs to be a period.

2. can't be right -- because if you remove the clause within the commas, the sentence does not make sense.

3. seems wordy...but appropriate and clear

4. "while...,still..." --- INCORRECT

5. needs to be "despite the improvement in ..."

so i guess, from elimination, 3 winds up being the best answer

In the context of the question....

their needs to have clear reference to "Inhibitants of Sahel" and thus all the subjects with Inhabitant's condition are WRONG, as they make subject as conditions rather than Inhabitants.
- - Eliminates 2 and 5.

Modifier error in 1 --
"After the 1973 drought's 70% total cattle loss" seems to modify "Living condition".

Left with 3 and 4.
In 4 - While...Still, incorrect clause.

Clear Answer 3.
When you think you can or you cannot, you are generally correct.
