Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore refused to carry even a pound of mail, despite being offered $1,000 to do so.

Can somebody please explain why E and not A. is the idiom attempt at wrong in A? What can be wrong with A that we can use for sure with other Q.

for his attempt is wordy hence A is correct

Not an expert but let me try this.

A puts "for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight", inside the commmas, thereby making the information non essential , i think the phrase in the the commas is essential to the meaning of the sentence.

Its run-on sentence. Two independent clauses need 'comma+fanboys' not 'therefore

A. Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore - "was very reluctant to" should modifying C.L, it should be as close as possible to C.L.

B. When Charles Lindbergh was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, being very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he

C. Since he was very reluctant to carry any extra weight on his plane when he was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, so Charles Lindbergh - I believe when we use 'since' we should provide a time frame which is not mentioned here! Ex: Since 1980... (please correct me if I am wrong)

D. Being very reluctant to carry any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight was the reason that Charles Lindbergh

E. Very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh - Correct because: 1) modifier is correctly modifying C.L 2) more concise than all the other options.
