We need to bring in a contrast to show how though US citizens account for only 5% of the population, they consume more resources.
Directly A, B and C get eliminated because they are not contrast indicators.

D-> the option seems to suggest that US citizens have/ rather possess 5 percent of world's population. which is wrong. Eliminated.

E correctly brings about this contrast. Correct answer.
