Manhattan test --Frank Lloyd Wright

by kaulnikhil » Sun Aug 30, 2009 3:32 am
Though Frank Lloyd Wright is best remembered today because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, most of his buildings were intended to blend into their surroundings.
because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum
for bold designs such as the one for the Guggenheim Museum
because of bold designs such as the Guggenheim Museum
because of bold designs such as that for the Guggenheim Museum
for bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum's
went for E as the original sentence uses a like, and thought that it would be better since B ,which gives an example and hence changes the meaning ..are there any issues with Guggenheim Museum's?cant it suggest Guggenheim Museum's designs ?
I went with B.

I think such as is the correct usage here and we cant compare bold designs to the actual museum.

I will go with E. Should be comparing bold designs not museums and E is the only one that does that. OA please

I will go with "B" looks wordy but very precise. I will take back C as my choice.

OA B
wanted to know why E is not correct .?? hw do we know the sentence wants to give us an example of his work . the original sentence uses a like ..so the sentence might be just referring without giving an actual example., so thought like might be better close to the original meaning ..are there any issues with Guggenheim Museum's?cant it suggest Guggenheim Museum's designs ?

LIke is used for direct comparison, ones that are easier to identify: Like Jefferson, Franklin was a conservative.

It appears that the sentence is going for an example, the best way to illustrate one is to use "such as".

to use Museum's, we need to use "Like the museum's design" 's needs an object.

It has to be either B or E because of the idiom remembered for ... Babe Ruth was remembered for his home runs. Besides the idiom, E is incorrect because in this instance, the sentence is using "like" as a "for example" tool. The sentence would then suggest that the bold designs similar to the guggenheim museum's but not actually the guggenhein. I went to the party with people like Brett Favre would suggest that Brett Favre didn't go to the party.

B isn't particularly good but the others are particularly bad. I don't really understand what it means - "such as the one for the guggenhein musem" suggests that there is a bold design for the museum. It makes sense but I personally think the meaning is a little off.
