More than 30 years ago Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump", as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.
(A) Same
(B) like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.
(C) as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others.
(D) like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others.
(E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one.
My question is, how do you decide looking at the sentence that you are comparing genes with pearls and not their actions (verb)?
I understand that " pearls moving mysteriously from one .. to another" is not a clause but a phrase. Is this why "as " does not fit in here?
Would the following sentence then be correct?

What about this one?
