A report released by Ameracan Dental Association maintains that much of the increase in cases of type-2 diabetes can be attributed to poor eating and excersise habbits
1. ...................
2. many of the increase in cases of type-2 cases are attributable
3. they can attribute much of the increase in cases of type-2 diabetes
4. doctors attribute much of the increase in cases of type-2 diabetes
5. manny of the cases of increased type-2 diabetes can be attributed


Should it be much or manny here...........

I feel it should be "much" as it refers to the "increase" in the no of cases and not to the "no. of cases"

It depends if the thing which is referred is a count noun or non count noun.I hope you know this already but just in case...

"Much" refers to non count nouns and "Many" refers to count nouns.

I guess "much" is correct here as we cannot count "increase"

How does 1 increase , 2 increase sound ?
whereas "Many" wd be correct if it directly referred to cases..
any other views?

I woudl agree in terms of count vs non-count nouns. What is the OA, I say C

Much of the increase is preferred here as "increase" is non-countable
in this context.

A - looks ok
B - "attributable" incorrect
C - "they" lacks a referrent or is incorrect - it can't refer to American Dental assoc.
D - looks ok but changes meaning slightly to indicate that doctors
attribute as opposed to the report
E - many incorrect

toughie between A and D. A preserves the original meaning, so slightly
inclined towards A, even though it uses passive

The ans given is A and explanation is similar to what many of u have given.
But i dont understand;how can u not count increase in cases eg increase of 4, why has it been given as non-countable

down to A and B.

Now for increase..we can't write one increase...two increase...three increase and so on..So increase is uncountable...So much is correct and hence A.

@Experts: Pls help in this.
