The most prominent result of Professor Winick's archaeologival research has been discovering that a pharaoh who had ruled in the last days of Egypt was burried with fewer artifacts than their earlier counterparts.

a - likewise
b - the discovery that pharaohs who had ruled in the last days of egypt were not burried with as many atrifacts as their
c - to discover that pharaohs, which ruled in the last days of egupts, was burried with fewer artifacts than their
d - the discovery that pharaohs who ruled in the last days of Egypt were buried with fewer artifacts than were their
e - to discover that a pharaoh who ruled in the last days of egypt was buried with fewer artifacts than were his

This is from PR - verbal book. The answer as per PR is D; mine is E.

the differences between D and E are - 1# pharaohs and a pharaoh and more importantly discovery v/s discover. why is 'the discovery' right?

Thx in advance

Well I believe E changes the meaning

Here you are trying to compare how many artifacts the pharaohs who ruled in the last few days of Egypt were buried with, with those who ruled earlier.

However E seems to say that only one pharaoh ruled the last few days of Egypt.

In D you have many pharaoh who ruled in the last few days and E you have only one pharaoh ruling in the last few days.

I hope you understood the difference

I understand what you are getting at but somehow I am still not convinced. sprry to drag on mate.

the comparison bit is there both in d and e and my reasoning tells me that they are ok. the only bit then comes to is - whether there was 1 pharaoh or many phraohs.

PRs explanation is - the subject of the sentence is the noun 'result' and hence 'discover' should be in the noun form - hence 'discovery'.

I am still learning the ropes in terms of these formal grammar lessons..

The PR explanation is correct over here. Since RESULT is a noun so what could be the RESULT?

RESULT - The discovery of something (if result is noun).
RESULT - To discover something (if result is verb).

d - the discovery that pharaohs who ruled in the last days of Egypt were buried with fewer artifacts than were their
e - to discover that a pharaoh who ruled in the last days of egypt was buried with fewer artifacts than were his

Can some one explain is there a pronoun reference error in D

"their " may refer to artifacts also...

please clarify...

I choose E...In D and E there is no grammatical error in my opinion...

I guess D changes the meaning ...(pharaohs)
while E maintains the same meaning as intended by original sentence ( a pharaoh)

Definetely D.

The result has been...the discovery is correct.

The result has been...to discover is not right. The infinitive as the subject complement would require a infinitive in the subject as well.

To do (one thing)...is to do (something) would be an acceptable form.

Someone could PM stacey if he/she wants to clarify.

The discovery options are the way to go. "to discover' doesn't seem right with the first line- prominent result of Professor Winick's archaeologival research has been

IMO: E
this sentence compares pharoh with his counterparts not compare artifacts

We're talking about the "result" which means the discovery has already been made. In E, it starts with to discover.. which more or less refers to something that's going to be done soon or someone is trying to do at the moment.. where in D, it's already done.. "the discovery". I think.
