Toxic waste products

by soumyopriyosaha » Wed Jan 27, 2010 9:52 am
Most bacterial populations grown in controlled conditions will quickly expand to the limit of the food supply, produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reached an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.

(A) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reached an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.
(B) will have produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth and also will reach an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.
(C) will then produce a toxic waste product that inhibits further growth and thus reached an equilibrium state in a very short time.
(D) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach equilibrium.
(E) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach an equilibrium state in a fairly prompt way.

IMO D

A Incorrect parallelism. You need to use the same verb tense for all of the verbs

B Same as A

C Same as A

D Correct

E it changes the meaning from reaching equilibrium in a short amount of time to the means that equilibrium is reached.

FIRSTLY I THINK THERE IS A TYPO MISTAKE
OPTION A and the underlined part is not same

considering A) as original IMO D is correct

the q is testing parallelism

a) will expand,produce and reached.....are not parallel
b)will expand, will have produced , will reach ......are not parallel
(C) will expand, will then produce ......,reached ....are not llel
(D) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach equilibrium.
(E) meaning altered

Sorry for the typo.
OA is D. But in D, it doesn't mention the time frame for reaching equilibrium. So is it not a change in meaning?

Earlier in the sentence it says "will quickly expand", this already gives you a time context, so anything else is redundant

Thanks to Osirus for explaining the role of "will quickly expand " which makes the "within a relatively short time" part redundant. I initially chose E but now D makes more sense.
