One critic's response to the philosopher's new work is (not that the position it takes is heretical, as some have asserted, but instead) nothing new to anyone who knows anything about the topic.

A not that the position it takes is heretical, as some have asserted, but instead

B not that the position it takes is heretical, like some have asserted, but it is

C not that the position it takes is heretical, as some have asserted, but rather that it is

D that the position it takes is not heretical, like some have asserted, instead

E that the position it takes is not heretical, as some have asserted it to be, but rather it is

The needed to correct sentence is in the ( ). pls help to explain me, I chose B, why C is correct???

At one glance I can see two differentiating errors in B which are absent in C.

Choice B) not that the position it takes is heretical, like some have asserted, but it is

1) that is missing from the later half of the construction --- not X but Y
2) like is used to compare clauses. "as" should be used here.

Hope it helps.

like is used with nouns.

as is used with clauses

Also in this sentence the idiom used here is not that x but that y
