610 - Beaten by GMAT - but not giving up

by rishi4you » Thu Aug 27, 2009 11:27 am
My Unofficial exam score:

MGMAT1 - 590

MGMAT2 - 580

MGMAT3 - 610

MGMAT4 - 640

MGMAT5 - 680

MGMAT6 - 700

GMAT Prep 1 --took mutiple times averaged around 680, last one 2 days before the test was 620 but a week before i had score 710.

GMAT Prep 2 -- 2 days before actual exam 640. Apart fom the last 3 tests i had not written the AWA's.

Actual Exam - 610.(Q46,V26)

I had taken my official date for GMAT after scoring a 700 for the first time in MGMAT test. I had also scored around 710 and 700 in GMAT Prep. Brimming with confidence, I was hoping to get somewhere between 680-700 in my official test. I did the folly of taking 2 more additional tests over the weekend one MGMAT and one GMAT Prep both in the evening and i scored poorly , 620 in both. But i had lots of interventions and i had not taken them in test conditions. So i brushed the scores aside , even though i went through the mistakes which i had done and more of them were silly mistakes. But this thing was playing at the back of my head as to why i got so poor score. I took a proper 7 hrs sleep the previous night. In the morning i revised all the SC topics , specially the modifers , parallelism . I also revised inequalities, absolute value and sequecing and symmterical funtions - weak areas of my quant. I reached the exam center half an hour before. I started the AWA's pretty confidently and infact had to cut short my Isse essay as i was running out of time. I tooka break , went and had some dry fruits and sipped lemonade and came back all geared up to tackle Quant . ons.

Quant:
Was expecting around 47-48 . But could maanage only 75 percentile. Missed out on some of the tough DS ones.I had realised that i tend to do silly mistakes for 500 level and thats why i started very cautiously and double checked my answers for the first 5-7 quesions. I was gaining in confidence and as the question kept popping up i thought i was doing good. Somewhere between 20-25 i realised i was 4-5 question behind clock so i decided to do some calculated guessing for questions i thought i would not be able to solve in 2 mins. I did that for a sets and average Ds questions. With 9 mins left on the clock i was on question 30 and i decided its time to do some guess work again. I guessed on one geometry based Ds questions but then i decided i would not guess on consecutive questions and i got a PS and i solved it only to find a tough DS. Overall i would say my Quant went on fine and i felt good after completing this section. I realised i could have done better if i could solve things faster and not wasted those extra 2-3 mins in double checking the first 5-7 questi But i thought i did average in DS probs which has always been a struggle for me. I could have done better and infact i know the areas which i need to improve upon- Sequence, Absolute value, Inequalities, and VIC's has been some of my weak areas. I also need to find a way to solve things faster as i knew that i could solve the last 4-5 PS problems but had to guess becuase of time constraint and that might have contributed to a poor 46.I am looking for ways to imporve this to 48-49.

My Quant Preps:
Self study from MGMAT Number Properies, Word, Inequalities, FDP. Geometry i thought was the easiest in GMAT to score and i never had problem. Did around 10-12 GMAT club tests which are good but no way near to GMAT types in logic. So i was not reading too much into what i wa scoring. I tend to spend more than 2 mins in some tough PS probs. But DS has been my nemesis and i am looking to imporve on these as the last 6-8 question on the exam always tends to be on DS ones and under timed condition i tend to struggle on these. So any specific suggestions here .?

Verbal:.

I took a break, went to the rest room and then took a resolve that i need to ace the Verbal also and i should get somewhere around 670-680.Was aiming to score around 33-37 based on the recent test scores and after putting it an additional 3 months to prepare only verbal. But this proved out to be a debacle. Not sure what happend.

I started catiously on the verbal also. Got the first 3 questions as SC. The third one was a tough modifier one and i realized that i have started on a good note. The First RC was a about a Afro-African lady selling some product and her contributions towards the betterment of the Afro-african society. I thought this RC pasage to be of average difficulty based on the RC passage which i had done from GMAT Prep. Then again i got a bunch of CR questions primarily strenghen and weaken ones. I got some assumptions question also and i thought i was doing pretty decent, even though i realized that i was a tad behind the clock .Halfway through i was on question 18 and i realized i need to catch up a bit. Then came the long passage about some superEarth and its core , mass, radius. I went through the passage carefully and then started attempting the questions. I had to read through the passage again to get some detail questions . I had 2 detail, one inference and one primary purpose .After this i was on question 27 and i had 20 mins left. I realized i was taking more time on CR but i thought i would compensate that with the SC as i was confident on those. All together i got 2 short passage , i long one but i would rate all them to be moderate difficulty level. The toughest question i thought i got was on CR and even some of the SC's . With 5 mins remaining i was on question 38. I got 2 CR ones which i took more time and was left with 2 question and 1.5 min. 40th was a bold faced CR and i was caught up in untangling it and had 3 secs left for the last , before i could even complete reading the last question, i had to answer it, i clicked on the first option but not sure where it was accepted or taken as not attempted. Overall i thought my pacing was good except the last 5 question one of which was bold faced and i normally take more than 2 mins for those and i thought it cost me dearly.I am not sure how much that last unanswered question would have affected the overall socre( a poor 26), but assuming even i got the last 2 questions right, i would have got around 28-29 which is something which i was scoring when i had started my preps. verbal was a complete debacle for me.

My Verbal Preps:
I had photocopied the OG 11 Sc and done all the problems twice. The second time i wrote why each wrong answer was wrong and tried to match that with the OG explanation. For CR i had done all the OG and Verbal Supplement problems and my hit rate was around 75% .For CR i had read some introductory chapters of Power score bible and made some notes. Then i read and Assumptions, Draw the conslusion, wekening and strengthening chapters from MGMAT Strategy guide- this helped me to some extent. For RC, i had done the LSAT passages and followed MGMAT guide which i thought was not that gr8. MGMAT guides for verbal apart from SC, does a OK job for RC and CR. Its not something as good as what we have for SC. I am not sure where to start from. But i would list these as my weak areas -- Bold faced and Evaluate Argument questions on CR , breaking of long obscured SC questions, RC depends upon passage so cant say. Any suggestions, i am planning to appear in a months time. I am mainly looking to boost my score in Verbal. I would appreciate any solid strategies to consider, any change in approach.

I just took the test, and it sucked! My score was Q40 and like you, V26

Well my mistake was that I concentrated only on Quant, which I naturally suck at. I purchased all the quant books by MGMAT, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, I was only able to fully cover 3.5/5 quant book. I planned to save Word Translations for the last book to tackle since that is my greatest weakness... but I was only able to read through the first few chapters. Anyway, I ending up with Q40 in the actual exam today.
I definitely plan to retake the test in December, which should be enough time for me to take the time to go through all the Quant questions in OG and may be practice Kaplan's Advanced GMAT questions, if I have the time.

Now, with the actual Verbal exam, I was unable to completely finish the test; I had to quickly guess the last 5 questions before the timer ran out. Silly me, I assumed that because I'm a native English speaker and that my unnatural novel reading affinity would be enough to blow the verbal out of the water without really going through the practice questions in OG (stupid!). Anyway, I ended up with V26 in the exam, which really sucks and is a bit of an ego burst for me :( since I'm usually good at Verbal questions... I guess I just need to get used to question formats in order to kick Verbal's nuts ;)

Anyway, I am now almost certain that with this lesson learned, I will be able to score right around V40-V45 when I retake the test in December (fingers crossed!) and hopefully find my way around Word Translation problems in order to boost my Quant to Q45-Q51. Amen!

But for now, I am taking a break from studying, and will pick up my books in the month of October... until then, I'll be lurking around the corner reading to find out how the next person beat the GMAT.

Hey rishi4you,

I see you've asked for advice from some of the forum members, including myself. IMHO, if you would like to have a question answered by a specific member, then you should PM him/her... We don't always browse all sections.

Unfortunately, my first observation comes in relation to your practice tests. Your last two scores seem to be in line with the real thing, so your score isn't that much of a surprise for me. Of course, the odd thing is that your final scores are not in line with the average of your prep. Did something happen that week to affect your performance? Maybe you had something pop up in your personal/professional plane or maybe you just react badly to stress. If this is the case, here's some advice:
1. When you're seated at your station, forget everything about anything else except the test. Just say to yourself: "OK, my personal life is important to me, but any thoughts I have can wait for just 4 hours."
2. If you're feeling stressed because the test, I have experimentally "discovered" another way to make you feel more comfortable. Before important tests, I'm always glad to be there and anxious to get started, since I know that a few hours from the start, I'll be done with it. I say to myself: "Yay! In 4 hours I'll be done with it and then I'll go home and relax/have some cake!" (and the cake doesn't have to be a lie - if you know the game).

Now, this is all stress management, but let's get down to practical stuff you can do to improve your score. For quant, I see you've realized on your own that you need to focus on your weaknesses. Apart from practicing with the appropriate guides, you should also search the forum for keywords, like "permutations" or "standard deviation". You'll find a lot of problems and most of them are advanced level, since people tend to post the questions they're having trouble with.

Improving on timing is about feeling comfortable about all types of problems, so practice will eventually lead to positive results in this field as well. Here are some other tips:
- don't write too much/too messy. You'll get confused about the scribbling
- use mental math (i.e. in 23*49 notice that 49 = 50 - 1 and use this to solve quicker)
- always time yourself when practicing, even if it's 10 problem sets
- try to memorize some important stuff (i.e. squares up to 15), so when you're taking the test you don't have to waste time with calculations

I see you're having trouble with DS. I myself was uncomfortable with this type of problem, since I'd never seen it before. All it came down to was practice and knowing the AD-BCE split (use "AD-BCE as a keyword for search to get details). There isn't much else you can do except know the type really well and improve on concepts.

There's not that much I can recommend for verbal. Maybe some careful review of the MGMAT SC guide will help you improve upon this section. The fact is, I understand this is a pretty dense, tip-heavy material. If you just breeze through it, the rules will just be a tangled mess in your head. You need to carefully digest the material! Same goes for CR: don't just read the first few chapters of the CR Bible (which I believe is a superb book), but do your best in understanding and accumulating as much info as possible. There might be some value out of buying the new OG, since it's a good resource for more practice questions. However, if you feel that you have forgotten most questions (unfortunately, CR questions stuck to my head like glue), then it's OK to just redo the OGs.

One last thing: don't overwork the first few questions. It's OK to spend the allotted 2 minutes per question in quant, maybe slightly more, but don't go for more. Guessing a lot will surely hurt your score and leaving blanks is "suicidal". Same goes for verbal.

All the best with your retake!

Thanks Dana for your inputs. I had not just skimmed throgh the MGMAT SC guide but made my own notes for all the imp topics such as Modifiers, Parallelism, Sub-Verb, Comparison . Moreover i had done the OG 11 twice and the second time i had written by own explanations for each of the answer type and tallied that with the OG explanations and made a note of things whenever my own explanation was haywire from the OG ones. But i felt somehow that the actual SC question were much more tougher and it was very hard to answer those in under 90 secs.

This time i am trying to master all the idioms and trying to go over all the GMAT Prep SC questions and i feel they are the closes to the actual exam. I have also got OG 12 and new Verbal supplement and do the same exercise which i had with OG11. What else do you think i can do to make my SC rock solid.

For CR i had gone over the Power Prep Bible once and made my own notes for the question types but the procedure mentioned in that book, i had not followed in the actual exam. I am planning to do a detailed study of the CR guide this time. What else can i do here.

Hi zainabubbu,

Even though i am a non native speaker but i use to consider my english pretty decent, only to get a a rude shock with a V26. So i feel whether it is native or non-native, the GMAT SC is tough if you do not know the GMAT grammer and how to break things up and pick up the wrong stuff quickly in under a minute, anyone would struggle.
The good news is you can master the GMAT garmmer specially the following

V-verbs
P-Parallelism
I- Idioms
M-Maodifiers
P-Pronouns
S-Subject Verb

and with some practice with real GMAT SC you should be on your way to score decently. It works like this, if you can get 12 out of 15 SC's right in the actual exam , offcourse out of these 12, 6-7 have to be of 650 -700 level quesitons then you can gaurantee yourself a 35+ unless you do not bomb your CR and RC.

Bcoz you are a native speker, RC and CR should come naturally to you but you may want to consider going through the CR bible just to hone your logic reasoning skills.
