The recently reelected president of Cyprus has asked that the United States would encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls their northern regions, to withdraw from his country.
(A) that the United States would encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls their
(B) of the United States that it would encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls their
(C) that the United States would encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls its
(D) that the United States encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls their
(E) the United States to encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls its

This question is mentioned in Kaplan 800. This question basically tests the subjunctive mood. A,B and C can be ruled out. However according to me D should be used as subjunctive mood requires infitive form of verb without 'to'. But E is given as the right option. I got narrowed down to D and E. another distinguishing point between D and E is that E has "its" at the end which seems right to me. But still E has "to encourage" which is not used in subjunctive mood

The word "asks" take both subjunctive and infintive.

The verb usage in E isn't incorrect; you can use the verb "to ask" without it being in the subjunctive form. This article discusses this usage: https://grockit.com/blog/gmat/2009/12/18 ... u-do-well/. However, the pronoun in D absolutely is wrong. The use of a plural pronoun to refer to a country is definitely incorrect, and is the kind of pronoun error that's tested fairly regularly. Based on the split between their and its, only C and E are viable choices, and as you noted, C does attempt to use the infinitive, and does so incorrectly. Therefore, E is the correct choice.

Can we also say "to encourage" and " to withdraw" are parallel only in option E ?
