Eastern European

As certain Central and Eastern European countries are fast-tracked into the European Union, some scholars feel that more social schisms may ultimately be intensified by issues of class rather than those of race.

As certain Central and Eastern European countries are fast-tracked into the European Union, some scholars feel that more social schisms will ultimately be intensified by issues of class than race.

Certain Central and Eastern European countries are fast-tracked into the European Union, and as this happens some scholars feel that more social schisms will ultimately be intensified by issues of class than by those of race.

Certain Central and Eastern European countries are fast-tracked into the European Union, so scholars feel that more social schisms will ultimately be intensified by issues of class than by those of race.

Just as certain Central and Eastern European countries are fast-tracked into the European Union, some scholars feel that more social schisms will ultimately be intensified by issues of class than by those of race.

IMO D

Correct sentence should end in "by those of race" -- Parallelism

So, left with options: C, D & E

C: "and as this happens" Wordy
D: an apt way to put forth the idea in the sentence
E: very close to the correct option, but unidiomatic. It should have been "Just as X, so Y"

Comments welcome!!

A?

IMO A is correct here.
B through E mention [social schisms will ultimately be intensified ]
where as in original sentence it says [social schisms may ultimately be intensified ] the tone here is mild which becomes strong with "will"
also idiomatically
more x rather than y is maintained in A.

IMO:A

"May" is replaced by "Will" ...

in E, "just as" is wrong..

in D, it would have been more appropriate if " rather than " is used instead of "than"
.."than" is used for comparison...
wats the OA??

IMO D.

D has the correct usage of "more...than".

It cannot be "more...rather than".

torn between A and D. Would like to go with A but not sure if more ...rather than is idiomatic or not. i'd like to think so but as someone pointed out, it may not be so.

A

by hitmewithgmat » Mon Feb 02, 2009 7:07 pm
I think the answer should be A.

reason.

the example, the same as A, use "may"---the uncertainty word.

however, the rest of the answers use "will"----the certainty word.

what do I mean?

you cannot change the meaning of the sentence that it gives you.

the usage of "may" and "will" is very different in a GMAT world.

hope this helps.
