1. Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.
(A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors
(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors
(C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
(D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in unclear reactors
(E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart

IMO C

as is used with clause, right use of x rather than y idiom

like in B wrongly compares reactors with nuclear fusion not similar things
in E unlike is wrongly compares reactors with nuclear fusion not similar things
in D ,and is wrongly used for a phrase ,and is used for list of items and for connecting clauses.

My answer: C
A,D: sounds like you can do both merging and splitting at the time, but have chosen to only do merging in this case
D,E: using "and" doesn't sound right.
B the action of "splitting apart" is likened to a nuclear reactor, instead of a process carried out by/within it.

"do and do" dose not comma.

the comma here show that ",doing" is nessesary . that means there is no separate actions here.

d,e is out

OA is C but I do not understand ." as nuclear actor do" mean " as nuclear reactor power the sun" or " as nuclear reactor power. I do not see the logic. pls, help

i really HATE HATE HATE this problem.

incidentally, it also appeared in the 11th edition OG, but i don't think it appears in the 12th edition. (i.e., i think it has been purged for good reason.)

still,
we know that CORRECT ANSWERS ARE CORRECT; i.e., anything and everything that appears in a correct answer has been carefully edited and approved by the gmac people.

so:

MY INITIAL REACTION:
i originally thought that (c) was wrong, because i couldn't tell whether "as nuclear reactors do" referred to
"merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart"
or just to
"splitting them apart"

i STILL can't tell.

apparently, though, the GMAT takes it for granted that "as nuclear reactors do" refers to the NEAREST participle. this is definitely worth noting and remembering.

personally, i think all five answer choices in this problem are AWFUL, but my opinion doesn't really matter. if the official writers like (c), then we just have to swallow it, grin, and learn the rules that make (c) correct.
