by engg.manik » Fri Jul 03, 2009 5:05 am
Analyst predicts a steady decline in the sales of the two wheelers staring in the near future. 55% of the two wheeler sold last year were sold to the age group of less than 28 yrs of age. This age group represents 30% of the total population. However demographers
Predict a decline in the number of individuals under 28.

Which of the following if true, least strengthens the reason for decline in the sales of two wheelers.

A)Two wheelers sales tend to increase as the size of the work force increases and the size of the workforce is expected to increase during the next decade.
B)Life expectancy of the population has increased by seven years owing to advanced health care and nutrition programs.
C)Many people actually switch to four wheelers when they near retirement age.
D)The number of 2-wheeler brands is increasing and the trend is expected to continue for years.
E)Analysts agree that people under twenty eight will continue to account for more than half of the automobile buyers in the next decade.

IMO A : One way to look at the question would be which of the following weaken the argument. A states that the size if the workforce is going to increase in the next 10 years and that in turn will increase the sale of 2 wheelers. To conclude the sales will not go down but increase which is contrary to the argument.

C & E clearly strengthen the argument....

D is neutral i guess...as increase in no. of 2-wheeler brands doesn't indicate nething...

B can be said to be weakening the argument...dont forget that still 45% of the 2-wheelers are sold to people over 28 nd if d life expectancy(older people will be better benifitted by improved health care...correct me if i m wrong) of this group increases the sale of 2-wheeler may not decline, despite of falling no. in age group less than 28...

As for A it explicitly weakens the argument...btw A & B...i will go with A...

@ ssmiles08: Nice avatar

I chose between A and D as well. Particularly, A does a better job, since it weakens the argument whereas D is relatively neutral.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

Domnu - Thank you :)

The chapter I read a couple of days ago about strengthen/weaken says that when they ask you which of the following is "least... something" look for something that "DOES NOT" strengthen. It might or might not weaken the argument. All other 4 answer choices would either strengthen the argument or would be out of scope.

B) is out of scope, it talks about healthcare and life expectancy where as the main basis of the stimulus is vehicles especially two wheelers.

C) would strengthen the argument.

D) says the number of 2 wheeler "BRANDS" are increasing. doesn't say if people will be riding them or not. out of scope.

E) doesn't mention anything about 2 wheelers being bought or used by <28 year olds.

I will go with D and stand corrected if its not the OA.

Sometimes for EXCEPT and LEAST q's the answer may be the oppsoite of what's being asked or have no effect on the argument.

I feel A could strengthen it since it says the workforce will increase in the next decade (may be this is not not near future) as this decade may be near future. It could indirectly mean that the workforce will not increase in the near future (this decade) and therefore the sales will decrease.

Regards,
CR
